What is molluscum contagiosum?

Molluscum contagiosum is a common disorder of the skin caused by the poxvirus. It usually appears in the form of small, smooth skin-coloured or pink bumps scattered on the body, which are usually the size of a spot or pinhead. When inflamed, some of the bumps redden and cause an itchy, dry rash.

Molluscum contagiosum usually affects one or two parts of the body at a time, frequently appearing on the chest, back and legs. Other common locations include the face, neck, eyelids, thighs, genitals and buttocks. Molluscum contagiosum is often mistaken for acne as the molluscum bump releases a small white core when squeezed.

What causes molluscum contagiosum?

Molluscum contagiosum is most common in children, although it can occur in adults. Children with weakened immune systems (arising after chronic illnesses or taking immunosuppressive drugs) are most likely to develop the virus.

Molluscum contagiosum is extremely infectious, easily transmitted from person to person via skin contact, and common in people involved in contact sports, children in day care, and sexually active young adults. In individuals with strong immune systems the disorder can clear up in a matter of months or years without treatment.
