What is acne?
Acne is a skin condition caused by excessive oil (sebum) in the skin's oil glands. Although associated with teenagers, acne can also affect children and adults, and women in their twenties often develop acne even if they never suffered in their teens. Acne can appear as whiteheads, blackheads, spots, pustules or cysts.
What are the symptoms of acne?
If the surface of the skin becomes inflamed it produces a pustule, with deep inflammation resulting in a papule (pimple). Even deeper inflammation can result in a cyst. If the oil encounters melanin (the pigment that gives skin its colour) or becomes oxidised, the oil changes from white to black, resulting in a "blackhead." Contrary to common myth, blackheads are not caused by poor hygiene.

What causes acne?
Acne occurs whenever there is excess oil (sebum) on the skin. Sebum is a natural substance for lubricating and protecting the skin. If the oil glands produce too much sebum, it blocks the sebaceous gland openings, causing a build-up of oil underneath, stimulating an overgrowth of bacteria.
Although acne is not caused by bacteria or poor hygiene, it does make the situation worse. The bacterium Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) is a normal part of the skin's surface, protecting skin from harmful bacteria. If there is too much oil, the P. acnes grows inside the blocked pore, producing chemicals that alter the sebum's composition, irritating the skin and causing inflammation.
The three main causes of acne are excess oil, clogged pores, and bacteria. Some believe genetics, stress, hormone fluctuations, certain foods, or drugs may exacerbate acne, but none of these factors are proven to cause acne.
Choosing cosmetics that do not clog pores, cleansing pores regularly to prevent oil build-up, and maintaining a healthy diet, all contribute to acne reduction.
