What is athlete’s foot?

Athlete's foot (tinea pedis) is a fungal infection of the feet, which causes scaling, flaking and itching of the affected areas. Highly contagious, athlete's foot is caused by the same fungus as ringworm, and can quickly spread to other parts of the body.

What are the symptoms of fungal infections?

The moist skin between your toes is an ideal place for a fungus to grow. Athlete’s foot can be recognised by scaling of the skin between the toes; this skin then becomes moist or soggy. The skin of the foot may begin to flake and peel, with small blisters appearing. The new skin underneath infected areas of the foot may look red, sore and inflamed.

The athlete’s foot infection may also spread to the toenails, causing them to become thick and crumbly, and creating an unpleasant odour. Toenail infections are difficult to eradicate, because the infection is deep within the nail bed.
