What is herpes?

The herpes virus takes several different forms, and an estimated 90% of the American population is infected with one form or another. Over 40,000 new cases of herpes are diagnosed every day in the US alone – a staggering 15,000,000 new herpes infections each year.

The most common herpes infections are caused by herpes simplex 1 and herpes simplex 2. If herpes is not treated, the blisters can grow, and last up to several days, or even longer, eventually forming scabs which signify the end of the cycle.

Sufferers of genital herpes also 'shed' viral particles from their genitals; this viral shedding is believed to play a major cause of the worldwide herpes epidemic.

What causes herpes?

Herpes is extremely contagious and is transmitted by direct skin contact. Once a person is infected, the herpes virus resides in one end of the spinal column. Genital herpes occurs at the base of the spine in the ganglia whilst oral herpes infects the nerves at the top of the spine.

Directions for use
