What is herpes?

The herpes simplex virus takes several different forms, with an estimated 90% of the American population infected with one form or another. Over 40,000 new cases of herpes are diagnosed each day in the US – a total of 15,000,000 new herpes infections each year.

The most common herpes infections are caused by herpes simplex 1 and herpes simplex 2. Herpes simplex 1 is associated with oral herpes (cold sores and mouth blisters), whilst herpes simplex 2 is the main cause of the STD (sexually transmitted disease) genital herpes. Once herpes has been contracted, it is permanent.

Herpes outbreaks usually begin with small blisters. Symptoms include pain, itching and burning, although a tingling of the skin can also indicate that a herpes outbreak is imminent. If herpes is not treated, the blisters can grow, and last up to several days, or even longer, forming scabs at the end of the cycle.

Sufferers of genital herpes also 'shed' viral particles from their genitals; this viral shedding is believed to play a significant role in the worldwide herpes epidemic.

What causes herpes?

Transmitted by direct skin contact, herpes is extremely contagious. Once a person is infected, the herpes virus resides in one end of the spinal column. Genital herpes occurs in the ganglia at the base of the spine, whilst oral herpes infects the nerves at the top of the spine.

The most common cause of herpes is a weakened immune system, as the virus travels down the ganglia to erupt on the surface of the skin. Blisters often reappear in the same location in further outbreaks of herpes.

A weakened immunity can be caused by flu, stress, trauma, or exposure to environmental toxins.
