What is herpes?

The herpes virus has several different forms, and infects approximately 90% of the American population. Over 15 million new cases of herpes are diagnosed every year in the US - 40,000 cases each day.

Extremely infectious, the most common herpes infections are caused by herpes simplex 1 and herpes simplex 2. Herpes simplex 1 is the main cause of oral herpes (cold sores and mouth blisters), and herpes simplex 2 is the main cause of genital herpes. Once herpes has been contracted, it is irreversible.

Herpes normally begins with small blisters, and common symptoms can include discomfort, pain and itching. A burning of the skin can indicate a herpes outbreak is imminent. If untreated, herpes blisters may grow, lasting up to several days, before forming scabs at the end of the cycle.

Sufferers of genital herpes also 'shed' viral particles from their genitals and this viral shedding plays a major role in the worldwide herpes epidemic.

What causes herpes?

Passed on by direct skin contact, the herpes virus is extremely contagious. Once someone is infected, the herpes virus resides in one end of the spinal column. Genital herpes occurs in the ganglia at the base of the spine, whilst oral herpes affects the nerves at the top of the spine.

A weakened immune system is the most common cause of herpes, as the virus travels down the ganglia, erupting on the skin's surface. Blisters can often reappear in the same part of the skin during further outbreaks of herpes.

Weak immunity can be caused by illness, anxiety, shock, or exposure to environmental toxins.

Herpes sufferers can, to a certain extent, control their herpes outbreaks. This is achieved through changes in lifestyle, appropriate precautions, and the use of non-prescription products and/or prescription medication.

Ingredients

Several years ago, the effect of L-Lysine against the herpes virus was noticed in test tube experiments. Medical journals reported that changing the nutritional environment of herpes alters its capability to make essential proteins, and the balance between the two amino acids, L-Lysine and Arginine, can be critical when treating the herpes virus.

L-Lysine, in excessive amounts, damages the herpes virus, as does an insufficient amount of Arginine. The L-Lysine / Arginine ratio is the important factor, as a high ratio has a damaging effect on the herpes simplex virus.

Lysine has little known side effects, as it is an amino acid needed by the human body. However, L-Lysine should not be taken with milk or foods containing milk as it neutralises the effects of Lysine.

Please consult your doctor before using any herbal medications.

Do not take L-Lysine if you are using any of the following antibiotics: Gentamicin, Tobramycin, Amikacin, Kanamycin or Netilmicin.
