What is ringworm?

Ringworm is a fungal infection of the skin, similar to the infection that causes athlete's foot. Ringworm is a slow-growing fungus, and the first signs usually appear a few days to a week after exposure. Ringworm typically presents as a round reddened lesion, usually with crust and a raised outer edge, and the name ‘ringworm’ comes from these raised round or oval ring-like spots.

Ringworm tends to be slightly scaly with a clearer centre, and may or may not itch. There may be single or multiple spots, which often seem to "connect" with each other.

Ringworm of the scalp usually begins as a small spot, which becomes larger in size and leaves scaly patches of temporary baldness. Infected hairs become brittle and break off easily, and occasionally, yellowish cuplike crusty areas are seen. There will be hair loss, usually in small patches at first, and as time goes on the patches may disappear or reappear in other skin locations. Ringworm is a highly infectious fungus, and you should therefore throw away any combs, brushes or hats your child has used.

What causes ringworm?

Despite its name, the ringworm infection is caused by a fungus, not a worm, and can be contracted from close skin contact with other infected people or from infected domestic animals. Up to 15 per cent of American children under the age of 10 will develop ringworm, and it does not reflect on the cleanliness of your home.

Directions for use

Wash your hands, and then wash and thoroughly dry the affected area. Apply several drops of Ringworm No More and gently rub into the affected area three times a day. Continue to use Ringworm No More for one to two weeks after visible symptoms resolve, as the fungus may still be present even after visible symptoms are gone. If the rash reappears or your symptoms get worse, consult your doctor.
