What is shingles?
Shingles is a reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus (VCV), a type of herpes virus that causes chickenpox. Once you have had chickenpox, the virus remains dormant in your nerve roots, and for some people, the virus reactivates, causing shingles. People who have a weak immune system are vulnerable to reactivation of the zoster virus.
The symptoms of shingles include a shooting, burning pain or a bruised feeling on one side of the body or face. This can also come with a fever, chills, headache, or upset stomach.
Other symptoms include:
- Tingling, itchy skin followed by a red skin rash days later
- A group or strip of small, fluid-filled blisters
- A deep burning, aching, or stabbing pain - which may be sporadic or long-lasting
If you have not had chickenpox, nor been vaccinated against it, you can get shingles by coming into contact with the fluid inside a shingles blister.
What causes shingles?
Shingles is caused by a reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus (VZV), the virus that causes chickenpox.
