What are warts?

Warts are local growths in the epidermis (upper skin layer) caused by the HPV (human papillomavirus). There are more than 100 types of HPVs that infect humans, and over forty HPV types that cause genital warts. Genital (venereal) warts are transmitted through sexual contact, and are therefore deemed a sexually transmitted disease (STD).

What are the symptoms of warts?

Common warts (verruca vulgaris): Common warts are thick, firm bumps with a rough surface that sometimes resemble a cauliflower. These warts often have tiny dark spots, formed from clotted blood vessels and are most common on the knuckles, fingers, elbows and knees.

Verrucae (plantar warts): Plantar warts appear on the soles of the feet, the heel and toes. Plantar warts can be extremely painful, partly because they can grow back into the skin as the person's weight pushes onto the foot sole. Plantar warts often have a hard, white area with a black dot in the middle, which is the wart's blood supply.

Plane warts (verruca plana): Plane or flat warts are round, flat and smooth. They tend to be yellowish, brownish or skin colour, and usually appear on the hands, legs and face. Plane warts are more common in young children and rarely appear in adults.

Filiform warts (verruca filiformis): Filiform warts are long and usually appear on the eyelids, neck and armpits.

Mosaic warts: Mosaic warts grow in clusters, and palmar warts are mosaic warts that grow on the palm of the hands and feet.

Genital warts (condylomata acuminate): Usually, genital warts do not have symptoms, but they are associated with irritation, a burning sensation, or soreness. Women with warts inside the vagina may also experience bleeding after sexual intercourse or an abnormal discharge from the vagina.

What causes warts?

The HPV infection is common, infecting an estimated 6 million people in the US, 3 million of whom are between the ages of 15 and 25. HPV does not have obvious side effects as it can remain inactive or concealed inside the body. Therefore, many people can have HPV without even knowing it and may be unknowingly transmitting it to others.
