What are warts?

Warts are local growths in the epidermis (upper skin layer) caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. Although transmitted by skin contact, warts can often affect only one family member. People with warts can auto-inoculate themselves by touching an unaffected area on their body after touching their wart.

There are more than 100 types of HPVs that infect humans, and over forty HPV types that infect the genital tract and anus, causing genital warts. Genital (venereal) warts are transmitted through sexual contact, and are therefore deemed a sexually transmitted disease (STD).

What are the symptoms of warts?

Common warts (verruca vulgaris): Common warts are thick, firm bumps with a rough surface that sometimes resembles a cauliflower. These warts often have tiny dark spots, formed from clotted blood vessels. Common warts are most often found on the knuckles, fingers, elbows and knees, but can appear anywhere on the body.

Verrucae (plantar warts): Plantar warts appear on the soles of the feet, and occasionally the heel and toes. Plantar warts can be extremely painful, partly because they usually grow back into the skin as the person's weight pushes onto the foot sole. Plantar warts often have a black dot in the middle, with a surrounding hard, white area. The dark dot is the wart's blood supply.

Plane warts (verruca plana): Plane warts, also called flat warts, are round, flat and smooth. They tend to be yellowish, brownish or skin colour. Plane warts usually appear on the hands, legs and face. These warts are more common in young children and rarely appear in adults.

Filiform warts (verruca filiformis): Filiform warts are long and usually appear on the eyelids, neck and armpits.

Mosaic warts: Mosaic warts grow in clusters, and palmar warts are mosaic warts that grow on the palm of the hands and feet.

Genital warts (condylomata acuminate): Usually, genital warts do not have symptoms, but they are occasionally associated with irritation, burning, or soreness. Women with warts inside the vagina may experience bleeding following sexual intercourse or an abnormal vaginal discharge.

How do I get warts?

The HPV infection is common, infecting an estimated 6 million people in the US, of which 50% are between the ages of 15 and 25. HPV does not usually result in obvious side effects, as it can remain inactive or concealed inside the body. Therefore, a large number of people may have HPV without even knowing it. • Never share shoes and socks with someone who has verrucae
• Never scratch your warts or verrucae
• Wear flip-flops when going in and out of communal showers
• Wear flip-flops when walking around communal pools
• Clean gym equipment with a clean towel before use
• Never bite your fingernails if you have warts near them
• Never share towels
• Keep your hands as dry as possible
• Wash your hands thoroughly and regularly
