Nail infections make up around 50% of nail abnormalities, making it the most common nail disease. Fungal infections occur on both fingernails and toenails, affecting approximately 36 million Americans. Infections usually appear as discolouration of the nail (a white or yellow spot), and as the fungus spreads, the nail may thicken and nail edges may crumble; it can even result in the loss of the nail. Untreated, nail infections can last indefinitely, becoming painful, and causing irreversible damage to the nail.
Nail fungus affects more men than women, and is most common amongst the elderly.
Nail fungus can spread, infecting first one nail and then spreading to others. Infected nails usually begin with a white or yellow spot under the tip of the fingernail or toenail. As the fungus spreads deep into the nail, the nail thickens, becoming brittle or crumbly.
Other symptoms include:
Occasionally, the nail may become separated from the nail bed – a condition called onycholysis. Nail infections can also lead to finger or toe pain, and carry a foul odour.
Nail infections can also cause skin lesions called dermatophytids. These lesions do not carry fungus, but act like an allergic reaction, appearing as rashes or itchiness in areas on the body not infected by the fungus.
Fungi (microscopic organisms) cause nail fungus infections, as they thrive in warm, moist environments and do not need sunlight for survival. The most common group of fungi is known as dermatophytes, but some moulds and yeast can also cause nail infections.
Usually, nail fungal infections occur when fungi enter the skin through tiny cuts or small gaps between the nail and nail bed. Other factors raising the risk of nail infection include:
For those with weak immune systems, nail infections can lead to serious infections spreading beyond the hands and feet. Immune systems may become weakened from medication, diabetes, AIDS, cancer, or other health conditions.
Diabetes can reduce blood circulation and nerve supply to the feet, making it difficult for the immune system to detect and remove infection. Therefore, any minor foot injury increases the risk of serious bacterial skin infections, and requires prompt medical care.
